Rigid Chair

When tasked to design a chair that could flat pack and fit into a modern shared office space, I started by investigating the aesthetics of the office from the images that were provided. I found that there was a shared balance of light objects with dark accents, and that most of the dark accents were in the form of thin lines or curves. I decided to start by running with the idea of those formal elements being incorporated onto the chair back and seat.

After receiving feedback on my rough sketches, I decided to explore the potential designs of the seats and backs from a flattened perspective, in order to pin down a design.

Having created enough iterations to look more broadly at my concept, I decided that a lot of my initial designs would be to complicated, especially when repeated several times throughout the office space. I decided to take the most successful simple designs from my batch, and place them on a rough chair drawing.

Seeing these designs on a chair helped me to confirm my suspicions that while these designs would be great for a single statement piece chair, they would not work to fill an entire office setting. For my final design, which I made in rhino (class had moved to an virtual environment due to Covid-19) I decided to keep the same ratio of light to dark elements, however I simplified the seat and back to lower the amount of visual clutter.
